Emergency Housing Assistance Grants

Emergency assistance funds are made available by the State of Illinois, Cook County, the City of Chicago, and/or other private resources to assist low-to-moderate income households experiencing economic hardships. These grants are made as funding is available until the monies are exhausted and/or as the program timeframe allows.

MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE

City of Chicago Mortgage Assistance
Financial support is available to City of Chicago homeowners who have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are having difficulty paying their mortgage. Applications will be accepted starting May 20th. CLICK HERE for more information from Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS).

 

RENTAL ASSISTANCE

The State of Illinois, Cook County, and City of Chicago have new emergency rental assistance programs to support households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. CLICK HERE for an overview on all available assistance programs and program launch dates.

 

2021 Illinois Rental Payment Program (ILRPP)
Financial support is available to support households in Illinois who have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants are eligible for up to 15 months of assistance. Maximum grant amount is $25,000. The application will be a joint application from the housing provider and the tenant. If your landlord has not started an application, you may still apply, during an additional application period for tenants applying directly for rental assistance opening at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 28. Tenants have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 18 to complete their portion of the application. City of Chicago Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)*
Financial support is available to income-qualified City of Chicago landlords and renters who have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are having difficulty paying for rent and utilities. Applicants are eligible for up to 15 months of assistance, including utility payments.
The application deadline for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) was EXTENDED until Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 11:59 PM CST and has now CLOSED.
Be advised, processing may take several weeks.

Suburban Cook County Rental Assistance
Financial support is available to low- and moderate-income suburban renters and landlords who have experienced financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This program is now closed.

 

UTILITY BILL ASSISTANCE

State of Illinois Utility Bill Assistance Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Financial support is available to eligible low-income households in Illinois who need help paying their heating and electric bills. CLICK HERE for more information from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Chicago residents can reach out to directly to  CEDA to APPLY for Gas and Electric Assistance through the LIHEAP program.
