ComEd Customer Relief Fund

Program Overview

Economic hardships happen from time to time. ComEd, understands this so they have set up a fund to assist their customers, their neighbors essentially, during tough times. The new Bill Payment Assistance Program provides grants of up to $500 for income-eligible customers whose accounts have a past due balance. This program also provides grants of up to $1000 for qualified non-profit organizations customers with a past due balance. ComEd’s goal is to keep powering your life, especially through the tough times when you need a hand. Please note: Income limits apply.

General Eligibility Requirements - Residential

  • Applicant must be a current ComEd customer and have an active Residential account.
  • Applicant may be either a homeowner or a renter.
  • You must be receiving a separate ComEd bill from your rent statement.
  • Applicant’s household income must be at or below 300%  of the federal poverty level.

General Eligibility Requirements - Non-Profit

  • Must be a current customer with a registered non-profit account with a past due balance.
  • Must submit an IRS 501(c)(3) Determination Letter.

Income Guidelines

For residential customers, total household income must be at or below 300% of the federal poverty level based on household size.

Restrictions

  • Applicant must be the ComEd account holder. Applicant may designate someone to file an application for them on their behalf.
  • Your account must be active.

Closed accounts:

Accounts that have been closed or entered final status are not eligible for grant funds.

Immediate jeopardy of disconnection:

Accounts whose service has been disconnected are not eligible for grant consideration.  Any accounts that have received a notice of service interruption, will be considered in the same order of importance as all applications.  If you are in jeopardy of disconnection, please contact ComEd at 800 EDISON1 (800-334-7661) to discuss alternative payment arrangements.

Document Requirements

Applicants need to provide the following:

  • Signed NHS Household Income Affidavit- for households with members over the age of 18
  • Any Government Issued ID
  • Current/most recent ComEd statement; and
  • One item from the list below:
    Acceptable forms of income-supporting documentation:

    • Two paystubs from last 30 days
    • Unemployment application, approval letter or Statement of Benefits for most recent 90 days
    • Layoff/furlough notice for most recent 90 days
    • Most recent year federal, state, or tribal income tax return
    • Three months bank statements
    • Social Security Statement of Benefits
    • Veterans Association Statement of Benefit
    • Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit Program
    • Retirement or pension Statement of Benefits
    • Unemployment or Worker’s Compensation Statement of Benefits
    • Divorce decree, child support award, or similar official document to show household income
    • SNAP
    • SSI
    • Medicaid
    • Federal Public Housing Assistance documentation
    • Tribal-specific programs
    • Head Start
    • Zero Income Affidavit

Your application will be processed in the order it was received, and an eligibility determination of your completed application packet (which should include income support documentation, if applicable), will be sent by email to the address provided. An incomplete application packet could result in a delay in processing your application or a denial of your grant. If approved for the grant, the customer relief credit will appear on your ComEd bill within two billing cycles from an application approval date.
