4 Steps to Buying a Home in Chicago

Proud new homeowner, Leticia Guerrero.Ready to stop renting and start owning?

Since 1975, Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago has served over 260,000 clients and created over 7,000 new homeowners. Our secret? We walk you through the entire homebuying process from start to finish. Don’t just take our word for it. Try it yourself.

Step 1: Complete our Homebuyer Education Course

Our comprehensive Homebuyer Education course sets you up for success! Here, we go in-depth about budgeting, credit, inspections, the closing process, and down payment assistance. There’s a reason 50,000 residents have taken it!

Step 2: Meet with a Housing Counselor

Our HUD-certified Housing Counselors will then personalize a plan for you. We’ll meet with you individually to guide you through every step of the way.

Step 3: Check out our purchase assistance grants

Next, consider applying for one of our purchase assistance grants. Our TIF Purchase Rehab program can be used to fund up to 25% of your total project cost, which includes the purchase price, plus the rehab cost and closing costs. We also offer up to $30,000 in down payment grants.

Step 4: Apply for a Neighborhood Lending Services home loan

Choose our lending team and see if you’re eligible for down payment and closing cost support. After submitting an application, one of our loan originators will reach out to discuss your options!
