Mortgage Relief Campaign Helps Homeowners
The housing recovery has been uneven, leaving low-to-moderate income communities behind. With Chicago ranking 4th among U.S. cities with the highest underwater mortgage rates, we launched a Mortgage Relief campaign. Over the course of 15 weeks we have helped 143 homeowners so far qualify for federal assistance to keep their home with hundreds more in process.
The campaign launched in September 2016 to connect homeowners to federal programs before some of the resources expired on December 30, 2016. As a last push effort, we sought to provide relief to homeowners that were underwater, had a high interest rate mortgage, experienced a financial hardship or risked losing their home to foreclosure. Homeowners were encouraged to contact NHS for no-cost assistance by a housing counselor to assess their situation and identify a program to address their situation.
As a result of our efforts, we received nearly 1,000 inquiries, a 75 percent increase in our average call volume. Of those, 51 percent were delinquent borrowers and potential candidates of the Illinois Hardest Hit Fund program or the Home Affordable Modification Program.
